I like myself! I’m glad I’m me.

Have you read the children’s book, I Like Myself by Karen Beaumont? If you haven’t, I highly suggest the read. And yes, your kids will love it, but you may like it even more.

I like myself! I’m glad I’m me.
There’s no one else I’d rather be.

The cover of the book "I Like Myself." The cover is pink with a girl dancing around.Society is tough on women. Most of us feel it acutely. I feel it acutely. The world says we are what we appear to be. We are the purse we tote around, we are the cell phone in our hand, we are the jeans we wear, we are the make-up we apply. The list goes on and on and on.

I read this book when I was about 15. Yes, during the midst of my teenage years I read and fell in love with this children’s book. It spoke to me. It comforted me. It taught me I can love myself. I can be happy with who I am! And most importantly, I should like myself for who I am, not what I may appear to be. No amount of physical changes should make me like myself any less, because the inside is what matters most.

Even when I look a mess,
I still don’t like me any less,
’cause nothing in this world, you know,
can change what’s deep inside, and so…

No matter if they stop and stare,
no person
ever
anywhere
can make me feel that what they see
is all there really is to me.

To me, this is one of the most beautiful messages. It illustrates “Don’t get caught up in what the world sees. Love yourself, because you are YOU.” Contrary to popular belief, you are enough.

Do you love yourself even when you look a mess? How have you learned to love yourself? Are there any books that have spoken to your soul? I would love to hear your thoughts!

HERE is a link to a short video clip of I Like Myself so you can see the entire short story.

  1. I have never read this book but now I too love it!! I feel like motherhood has definitely made me love myself more. It seems their love fills me quite nicely. However I am human and often a hot mess and my pride can still definitely be found some days. 😉

    • You totally helped me make a connection! I completely agree. Motherhood has helped me so much. Loving my son and realizing his innate worth has helped me understand how much worth I have too. I’ve learned to love myself more. But, you are right, I totally have days when I wish I could be invisible when I’m out in public, because of how gross I look! haha 🙂

  2. How many women can honestly and genuinely say that they like themselves? I sure as hell know I can’t. And that’s horrible. That’s the power society has to define our worth as people. Fantastic post! Care to check out my blog?(: downwiththenorm.com

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it! It is so sad that society has damaged the self esteem of so many wonderful, talented women. I feel we really lose our power for good when we are stuck worrying about ourselves. I just checked out your blog! I love the theme- swimming against the current. Here’s to hoping we can swim against the current and really learn to love ourselves! Thank you for your thoughts 🙂

  3. I’ve never seen this book, but I love it already!! It’s hard to feel enough when the world says we’re not. What a great message. Your post reminded me of a song by Mr. Rogers (who doesn’t love him??) that goes, “Henry, Henry, I think it’s nice to be a Henry, sometimes. I think it’s nice to be myself. Don’t you? Don’t you? I think it’s nice to be myself.” I like to sing it with my kids names to them sometimes. 🙂 We need more reminders like this! Thank you! We ARE enough!

    • I loved Mr. Rogers! I don’t remember the song, but I love the message! I think it is great to sing kids songs like that. And you are right, I think it is so hard to believe we are not, when we are surrounded by people saying we aren’t. Hopefully we can all support each other and give each other reminders that we are! Thank you for your thoughts 🙂
